Google's Widevine Modular DRM is the built-in security option that provides secure video playback through the streaming subsystems of all modern Android and Chrome devices.

Using a Widevine protected video service operators and content owners can securely distribute premium content to a wide range of devices from global vendors who are part of Google’s ecosystem, enabling flexible models for monetization while protecting the content from unauthorized use and piracy.One of the benefits of using Widevine DRM is extending the range of secure service delivery through casting and redirection to Chromecast dongles and some Google Cast enabled smart TVs.

Full Native Client Security

All recent generations of the Widevine technology have supported HW level integration in the chipset of the client device, offering so called Level 1 security which is required for premium content including Ultra HD, 4K and HDR. This security model is integrated with Chrome and Android support of MPEG-DASH and Google's own WebM video format.

MPEG-DASH and CMAF Streams

The Widevine DRM service fully leverages Common Encryption (CENC) to enable a single stream with universal client DRM compatibility. The native AES CTR and CBC encryption key system already adopted throughout the industry gives full future CMAF compatibility.

Google Cast Support

Full Google Cast support for dynamic stream consumption in a secure manner across multiple slave device screen types.

Widevine DRM takes full advantage of HTML5 standardized Encrypted Media Extensions in browser based video service delivery to Google platforms. Client implementations of Widevine are required for all Android implementations - and any other device that supports secure YouTube playback.
